Atomic Design Sets A Studious Stage

Atomic Design set the stage for a star-studded concert in the Great Hall at The Warner Theatre in Washington DC on May 23, 2007. The concert honored Paul Simon as the first recipient of The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The concert will broadcast in high definition on June 27 at 9:00pm EDT on PBS stations nationwide.

Atomic Design’s Tom McPhillips was production designer for the event. Working closely with executive producer and writer, Bob Kaminsky, producer Allen Kelman, and lighting director Alan Adelman, McPhillips designed the stage with grand arched windows and elegant marble walls to replicate the look of The Library of Congress. McPhillips states, “It’s an honor to be involved with this project. Paul’s contribution to the music world is truly amazing. He is a very worthy recipient, and it’s always a pleasure to work with old friends like Allen Kelman and Alan Adelman.”

Simon was honored for his influence on popular music and lifetime contributions that positively embraced the world’s culture. The event included performances by music legends Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Art Garfunkel, Stephen Marley, and Yolanda Adams. Presenters included former poet laureate Billy Collins, Bob Costas, Charles Grodin, and Lorne Michaels.
