Studio Live Design FAQs

What Is Studio Live Design?

Studio Live Design is a member-based platform providing designers and technicians an integrated, multi-platform approach to staying informed, increasing visibility, and interacting with peers.

Who Is It For?

Studio Live Design is for working and aspiring designers and technicians in all fields of live events: theatre, concerts, corporate events, themed entertainment, opera, dance, architainment, etc.

How Does It Work?

Studio Live Design offers different levels of membership, from basic free membership with limited access to content and benefits, to platinum membership which provides a deeply immersive experience in the live design universe through a variety of touch points.

When Will It Be Available?

Studio Live Design will be unveiled in mid November, with a firm launch later that month at LDI.

Why Should I Become A Member of Studio Live Design?

The 21st Century Designer and Technician are wired in ways previously unimaginable. As early adopters of technology, they consume their content much differently than they used to less than five years ago, and in a wider variety of platforms. Training and education remains vital to their success and livelihoods, and while there are more opportunities for such training than ever before, there is often less time available to take advantage of it. And the market has no real platform that enables both aspiring and established designers and technicians to showcase their work and skills. All of these components and more are addressed with a membership in Studio.

What Does It Include?

Depending on the level of membership, Studio Live Design gets you discounts to the events produced by the Live Design franchise, including LDI, The Live Design Master Classes, The Envision Symposium, LDInstitute On The Road, etc; access to gated content on the Live Design website, including videos culled from our various events; a subscription to 12 issues of a cutting edge iPad-only version of Live Design magazine; the ability to post and share your work with like-minded entertainment technology professionals on a new feature of the website called Designer Showcase; and exclusive invitations to networking parties, salons, talks and other events throughout the year.

What Kinds of Gated Content Are Available?

Gated content consists primarily of edited footage taken from our various eventsSo if you can’t take advantage of all of the event discounts as part of your membership you will still have the ability to view select content from LDI, Master Classes, Envision, etc. In addition, select editorial content from our editorial team will also be gated, as will all content from the tablet edition of the magazine.

What Is Happening To Live Design Magazine?

Live Design magazine is transitioning from a print-based product to a tablet/e-reader-based product available exclusively on an iPad. As we move deeper into the 21st century, it is becoming clear that the way people consume their information is changing forever. Our research shows that 68% of the Live Design audience currently owns a tablet or e-reader, and another 50% of those who don’t will purchase one in the next year (with nearly all of them opting for iPads. Moving to a tablet gives members a far richer experience, and let’s them access it anywhere they may be in the world.

Is The Live Design Tablet Edition Just Another Glorified PDF?

No. The tablet edition of Live Design uses the Mag +, the same one used by publications such as New York Magazine, Popular Science, Maxim, and more. This platform incorporates rich media, video, photo galleries, audio and more for a richer experience for the reader. This platform also provides analytics for advertisers so that ad engagement can be tracked much like on websites.

How Will The Content In Live Design Change?

Moving to a tablet allows the editorial team the opportunity to take a much deeper dive into projects covered. Unencumbered by page counts and a static print page, each article will come to life and provide more of a “just like being there” feeling than ever before. In addition, look for the return of in-depth profiles of top and cutting-edge designers, rich in samples of their work, extensive video articles and interviews, and many more surprises.

What Is Designer Showcase?

It’s a new component of the Live Design Website in which members will be able to post images from their portfolio: photos, sketches, model shots, video, etc, based upon their level of membership.

What Are These Exclusive Parties And Salons All About?

Throughout the year, in conjunction with both our events and other industry events, we will host small gatherings of Studio members for receptions, networking opportunities, salons, etc. Key designers, technicians and other industry luminaries will be on hand to speak, answer questions, and generally hold forth. These are informal, intimate events designed to bring Studio members closer together both with each other and with the top names in the industry.
