Tony winners Marina Draghici and Robert Kaplowitz were among this year's Live Design Broadway Master Classes speakers
Presented on June 13, 2010 at Radio City Music Hall by The American Theatre Wing, the 2010 Tony Awards include seven awards for design. The Brits took home three of the design awards (as well as Best Play among others) for Red, the import from London's Donmar Warehouse about artist Mark Rothko. The musicals, Fela!, and American Idiot, each won two design awards, including those of Live Design Broadway Master Classes speakers Marina Draghici and Robert Kaplowitz who won for Fela! (the show seen by the BLMC this year). Christine Jones and Kevin Adams were rewarded for their outstanding work on American Idiot (the show chosen for the BSMC this year).
Live Design congratulates all the winners in the various design categories.. and those winners are:
SCENIC DESIGN OF A PLAY:Christopher Oram, Red
BEST SCENIC DESIGN OF A MUSICAL: Christine Jones, American Idiot
BEST COSTUME DESIGN OF A MUSICAL: Marina Draghici, Fela!
BEST LIGHTING DESIGN OF A PLAY: Neil Austin, Red

In a year when projection design once again played a leading role on Broadway—from Fela! and American Idiot to Memphis and others—one can only hope that the Tony folks will sit up and notice this important visual element, and add another design category to the mix.
