The Industry Predicts the Future
You’re smart. You’ve been in this business long enough to know a thing or two. So you tell us: What does the future hold? As part of the 35th anniversary issue of Entertainment Design, we want you to look into your crystal ball and tell us where you see the industry heading in the next 35 years. Will everything, including costumes, go digital? Will projection designer and lighting designer become one and the same? Will sound designers ever get their own Tony Award? Will all concerts be lip-synched? Will they ever cancel Survivor?

The Most Influential Designs of the Last 35 Years
Since 1967, the world of entertainment has seen some spectacular designs: Star Wars and Titanic, A Chorus Line and The Lion King, Pink Floyd’s The Wall Tour and U2’s Pop Mart Tour, Disney’s Epcot and Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure, and many, many more. For the special 35th anniversary issue of Entertainment Design, we want you to tell us: What were the most influential designs of the last 35 years? You can pick an entire project, a single designer’s contribution, or any combination therein. It can be the production design of an obscure indie film, the costumes of a big Broadway flop, the lighting of a particularly memorable regional theatre production, any of the projects mentioned above, or your first high school production.

THREE REGULAR COLUMNS DEBUT!

UNDER THE BIG TOP: Barnum & Bailey
This year’s circus tour extravaganza features a Broadway-worthy design, including costumes by Ann Hould Ward, lighting by Don Holder, and sets by Ken Foy. David Barbour reports.
This hugely popular Seattle-based show, an intimate evening of dinner and theatrical circus acts, returns for another year, with costumes by Louise DiLenge. Pippa Kiraly reports.
THEATRE: Thoroughly Modern Millie
Could this be, finally, Broadway’s big hit musical of the season? Based on the 1967 film (that’s right, the same year as Theatre Crafts’ debut), this production is receiving out of town raves and features a stellar design team: set designer David Gallo, lighting designer Don Holder, costume designer Martin Pakledinaz, wigs by Paul Huntley, and sound by Jon Weston. The ED staff reports.
OPERA:War & Peace
A new version of Prokoviev’s ambitious opera, based on Tolstoy’s equally ambitious novel, this co-production between the Metropolitan Opera and the Mariinsky Theatre of Moscow features sets by George Tsypin, costumes by Tatiana Noginova, lighting by James Ingalls, and projections by Elaine McCarthy. Ellen Lampert-Greaux reports.
