Holland America’s Zuiderdam
Holland America's newest luxury liner, the MS Zuiderdam (the first of the new Vista Class ships) set sail last December on its winter Caribbean itinerary with a boatload of entertainment technology in the main lounge, a smaller lounge, a disco, and numerous smaller performance venues scattered on many different decks. In the main lounge alone there are lighting products by ETC, High End Systems, Flying Pig Systems, Pathway Connectivity, Wybron, Vari-Lite, Altman, Lycian, Andolite, Thomas, and TMB, with effects by Le Maitre, Reel EFX, Pani, E\T\C Audiovisuel, Wildfire, and Artistry in Motion, audio components by EAW, Yamaha, LCS, Extron, TC Electronics, Lexicon, Eventide, Aphex, Klark Teknik, Shure, Sennheiser, Crown, Countryman, K&M, QSC, and Beyerdynamic, plus video elements by Barco, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Sanyo, and Alcorn McBride, and control by AMX and Dataton. The smaller lounge and disco also have equipment by Clay Paky, Martin, Triple E, J&C Joel Ltd., Rosco, Teac, Rane, Denon, Mackie, Pioneer, and Tascam. Consultants on the design and installation of the technical systems include Nautilus Entertainment Design and Scharff Weisberg, while scenic elements were provided by Showman Fabricators.

Spider-Man Live!
You’ve read his comic book, seen his movie, now catch him live on stage! Everybody’s favorite webslinger is out on tour in a new show geared to the kiddies, with surprisingly high production values. David Johnson talks to the design team—set designer Michael Allen, lighting designer Mike Baldassari, projection designer Michael Clark (that’s Mike A, B, and C to you), and sound designer Bruce Yauger. Lighting equipment provided by Fourth Phase, ETC, Flying Pig, Total Structures, High End, L&E, Diversitronics, Wybron, Le Maitre, MDG, Hudson Scenic, Wow! Works, Barco, Folsom Research, Dataton, EAW, DAS, PAS, QSC, Sony, Clear-Com, Telex, Midas, Yamaha, Roland, Denon, and GAM.

Alexander Dodge
The son of an architect, this busy set designer (Hedda Gabler on Broadway, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Toward the Somme at Lincoln Center, The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Stratford Festival), Dodge talks to Davi Napoleon about the role architecture plays in his design process.

Also in this issue...

The lighting industry has been plagued for years by less than stellar moving light libraries for software and controllers. Robert Bell discusses how things like Abstract Fixture Libraries and ACN's Device Description Language will alleviate that (or not).

Duncan Bell from Autograph Sound in London discusses the contentious issue of rental price discounting.

Elaine McCarthy offers tips on researching in order to find those obscure images no one has seen.
