In 1958, Marvin Gelman, the lighting designer of the Tonight Show established his own company, Lighting Services Inc. Beginning with the motto "everything in lighting from design to installation," the company changed focus to develop a complete range of designed and engineered specification-grade lighting equipment and accessories. Within a year Lighting Services Inc. became a fully fledged specialty manufacturer in display and accent lighting; 45 years later, LSI is one of the most successful independent companies in the industry.
Over the years, Lighting Services Inc. has picked up several prestigious awards. Its BP75 Image Projector Series won the Acclaim Award in the IIDA Product Design Achievement Awards and the Best Product Design EDDY Award from Entertainment Design magazine in 1999. LSI took home the 2000 ADEX Platinum Award for the MT6 Series, while last year the BP150 series won the LDI Award for Debuting Product of the Year, Lighting/Architecture.
LSI president Daniel Gelman says, "At this moment in time, there aren't too many independent companies that haven't been swallowed up by the big conglomerates. To have reached 45 is a testament to the fact that, as a company successfully going it alone, we continue to be flexible and listen to the needs of our customers."
Gelman is already looking forward to celebrating the company's half-century anniversary. "We may have come a long way in the last four and a half decades, but as far as Lighting Service Inc. is concerned our best is yet to come, both for the company and developments in lighting equipment. We're already considering ways to make important technological progression, and I predict we'll see big advancements in ceramic metal halides and also controllability--intelligent, addressable systems which can be fine-tuned and tailored to very specific needs. Lighting Services Inc. is still fulfilling its potential."
As one of the USA’s leading manufacturers of track, accent, display, and fiber-optic lighting systems, New York-based Lighting Services Inc. continues to expand. Working largely in the retail, display, architectural, and corporate lighting markets, Lighting Services Inc. has 140 representative agents worldwide, with plans for a UK base in the pipeline.
