Roman Polanski's The Pianist may have been named Film of the Year at this year's British Film Academy Awards, but the winner in two design categories was The Road to Perdition, directed by local boy Sam Mendes.
Awards went to production designer Dennis Gassner and the late cinematographer Conrad Hall, for their work on the Mendes film. (Hall is considered a sentimental favorite at this year's Oscar ceremony as well).
In the other design categories, winners were diverse. Ngila Dickson and Richard Taylor won in the costume design category for their work on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The film also won in the special effects category, earning awards for Jim Rygiel, Joe Letter, Randall William Cook, and Alex Funke. In the sound category, Michael Minkle, Domenick Tavella, David Lee, and Maurice Schell won for Chicago. Julie Taymor's Frida won in the hair and makeup category, with honors going to Judy Chin, Beatrice De Alba, John Jackson, and Regina Reyes.
