The time is now to apply for the Gilbert V. Hemsley Jr. Internship in Lighting at New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, and the Lincoln Center Festival. Applications are being accepted until February 15, 2002. Interviews for finalists will be held in New York in early April.

The internship is named for the distinguished lighting designer Hemsley, whose credits included the Broadway hits Jumpers, I Love My Wife, and Sugar Babies, as well as the famous Houston Grand Opera production of Porgy and Bess, and who dedicated his life to the training of young theatre professionals. For 19 years, the internship has continued his legacy by offering a unique experience to young designers. The program provides the opportunity to work in a professional repertory situation with resident and guest designers. Additional opportunities may include touring and media events. A small monthly stipend is provided, in addition to travel expenses.

Candidates should submit a résumé, a one-page statement of personal goals and anticipated benefits from the internship, and three letters of recommendation. The internship lasts from June 2002 to February 2003.
