Hosted by comedian Rickey Smiley and actress Essence Atkins, the Trumpet Awards ceremony is the highlight of the Trumpet Foundation’s events that pay tribute to African-American achievement and those who have triumphed against enormous odds. Honorees of the ceremony included Chaka Khan, Debra Martin Chase, Michael McMillan, Alonzo and Trace Mourning, Mayor Kasim Reed, Edward T. Welburn, Jr. and Charlie Wilson.
Lighting designer Mark Carver had the challenge of designing an elegant space that would render well on television. House lights were eliminated, and due to award winners making their way to the stage from the audience, Carver paid special attention to lighting the audience in addition to the presenters and performers. Fortunately, his years of lighting the space translated into a stunning display.
“You need to balance everything in television, so trying to keep the right contrast between the background and the subjects, which consists of the presenter’s area podium and the acceptance podium,” explained Carver. “It ends up a great deal of the show is shot in front of those backgrounds, so keeping them nice and pleasant for television is always a little bit of a challenge, and what makes it successful or not.”
Three board operators worked with Carver to drive content for the performances, with the focus on achieving the best televised experience.
The design consisted of VL 3000 spots, Coemar halos for the wash units and VL 2500 spots used on the floor and balcony for reverse shots. Bandits’ crew included John Lucksinger and Billy Willingham.
“We had a great crew,” said Carver, who also praised the venue for its lighting, crew and positioning. “Everything just worked out really nice.”
