SPECIAL REPORT: Sound
Noises On: Fans, Color Scrollers and Live
Theatre
It is perhaps the biggest bone of contention today among theatre
lighting and sound designers (and, to some extent, directors, general
managers, and producers): the noise created by color scrollers and
moving lights. Altering a design in mid-production to combat the noise
handcuffs the lighting designer’s creativity; forcing sound
designers to turn up the sound to compensate for it kills the live
experience. Who should be responsible? What are some possible
solutions? David Johnson gets the sound design point of view, while
Michael Eddy talks to lighting designers, as well as checking in with a
wide variety of lighting manufacturers on what steps are being done on
their end to address the issue.

TELEVISION
Designing Pilots
Just what's involved in designing a TV pilot? Besides a bit more money
and bit more time, there's the satisfaction of creating something from
scratch. On the other hand, there's the chaos of dealing with
producers' uncertainties and constant changes, and the very good chance
that your work will never see the light of broadcast. Production
designers Roy Christopher, John Shaffner, Maxine Shepard, Carey Meyer,
and others talk about such new and hopeful shows as Life of the
Party, What I Like About You, Presidio Med, and
Firefly. John Calhoun reports.
TECHNOLOGY
Acoustics for Multi-Purpose Halls
The more uses for a space, the trickier the acoustics. Famed
acoustician Christopher Jaffe discusses the challenges in making such
spaces sound friendly.
FESTIVAL
Tribeca Film Festival
The city pulled out all the stops for the recent Tribeca Film Festival
in Downtown New York—and so did the entertainment technology
community. Designer Kyle Chepulis was among the many local artisans
involved in the project. Vendors included Big Apple, ETC, Vari-Lite,
Wybron, Rosco, Lighting & Electronics, Sapsis Rigging, One Dream
Sound, Rose Brand, Showman Fabricators, Hudson Scenic, I. Weiss, Midas,
Crest Audio, Yamaha, Meyer Sound Labs, Klaw Bros., Radion, XTA, BSS,
