THEATRE: Broadway Bounces Back
The new season takes off with a number of new hits. Lighting Dimensions looks at four of them:
There’s Mamma Mia!, the international smash, featuring the music of ABBA, lit by Howard Harrison, arguably the most successful designer in English theatre today. Contributing vendors include Vari-Lite, ETC, Lighting & Electronics, DHA Lighting, Wybron, Strand, LeMaitre, Rosco, Bowen, and Robert Juliat. Equipment, except for the Vari-Lites, supplied by Fourth Phase.

Urinetown is the season’s surprise hit, a wicked spoof that moved from New York’s Fringe Festival to the Great White Way; Brian MacDevitt lights Scott Pask’s environmental set. Contributing vendors include ETC, City Theatrical, Wybron, Lighting & Electronics, GAMproducts, MDG, Bowen, and High End Systems.

Also, two revivals of Scandinavian classics: Hedda Gabler, lit by Kevin Adams, and Dance of Death, lit by Natasha Katz.
David Barbour and Ellen Lampert-Greaux check out the details.

PLUS: A Look at Off Broadway

CONCERTS: Janet Jackson
Dubbed the “Diva Dynamo” by The Washington Post, Jackson’s concert tour has been a phenomenon all summer and fall. Mark Fisher’s spectacular production design is lit by Abby Rosen Holmes, using lots of equipment from LSD and Vari-Lite, and DHA Lighting, Strong, Robert Juliat, High End Systems, ETC, and Diversitronics. Cathy McHugh provides an in-depth look.

PROFILE: Robert Wierzel
One of the most prolific and popular LDs in the worlds of opera, dance and regional theatre, Wierzel’s busy year included L’Etoile at Glimmerglass Opera, The Way of the World at Yale Rep, Big Love at Brooklyn Academy of Music, and The Cherry Orchard at Santa Fe Stages. Wierzel talks to Ellen Lampert-Greaux about his frantic schedule, his career beginnings, and his favorite productions.

FILM: Ali
An American icon’s life story reaches the screen in Michael Mann’s new film about the boxing legend. DP Emmanuel Lebezki (Sleepy Hollow, The Birdcage) takes John Calhoun, and you, on a guided tour through this project.

THEMED ENTERTAINMENT: The Olympic Cauldron
The Cauldron that helped launched the Sydney Olympics returns-as the center of a new fire, water, and light show at Olympic Park. Martin Professional and Clay Paky are among the key players in this one-of-a-kind presentation. Andy Ciddor reports.

TECHNOLOGY: GrandMA Goes to Church
What do you do when your church needs better moving light control? At Riverbend, in Austin, TX, they got MA Lighting’s GrandMA console. Michael Eddy finds out about the results.

EDUCATION: The Graduate, Part II
What’s it like to start your career as an LD in England? Jason Larcombe has done that, and he talks to Jacqueline Molloy about what he’s doing to launch his career.
