TOYS 'R' US IN TIMES SQUARE
The final piece of the Times Square puzzle falls into place with this spectacular flagship store for the famous retail chain. As designed by Paul Gregory of Focus Lighting, this two-story venue--complete with its own Ferris wheel, is made up of dozens of themed retail areas, all fronted by a totally original facade concept using lighting and digital imagery. Contributing vendors include: Entertainment Technology, RSA Lighting, Amerlux, Mark Lighting, Lightolier, Tech Lighting, Altman, Wybron, Martin, Insite Lighting, Lumiere, Widelite, Tokistar, and Diversitronics. Ellen Lampert-Gréaux deconstructs this massive project.
HERON CITY, STOCKHOLM
The first multi-level retail/entertainment center in Sweden's capital, features a varied series of lighting zones created by Illuminating Concepts. Companies involved include Targetti, Erco, Berga, DIL, Thorn, High End System, James Thomas, Apollo, Exterieur Vert, and ETC.
A hip new clothing venue for young people in Brea, CA, offers customers some bizarre looking custom fixtures along with smartly conceived retail lighting. Companies involved include Lightolier, Global, Legion, and Artemide.
HOTELS BY DISNEY
Ellen Lampert-Greaux reports on two new Disney venues on opposite coasts. Disney's Grand Californian Lodge, in Anaheim, and Animal Kingdom Lodge in Orlando. Contributing companies include: Prescolite, Lightolier, RSA, Sterner, Lumiere, Hydrel, Eric Industries, Lightforms, Arroyo Craftsman, Hanover Lantern, Mica, Troy, International Ironworks, Sirmos, Unilight, Times Square, ETC (for control), Osram Sylvania, and Rejuvenation Lighting.
The world-famous ruins of Pompeii have been beautifully lit by ENEL, Italy's national electricity board. Taking care not to damage these priceless remnants of a vanished world, the result is a spectacular success. Companies involved include Phillips and iGuzzini. Mike Clark reports.
