Two By Hugh
London-based LD Hugh Vanstone was back on the US side of the pond for a doubleheader, with Blast and Follies opening within weeks of each other on Broadway. For Blast, a spirited music and dance revue, the lighting rig was provided by Four Star and includes Flying Pig Systems Wholehog® II and ETC Obsession consoles, High End Systems Studio Colors® and Studio Spots®, DHA Light Curtains, ETC Source Fours, Wybron Coloram scrollers, Morpheus truss, and MDG atmospheric effects machines. Fourth Phase provided the lighting package for Follies, a revival of Stephen Sondheim's haunting musical, for which Vanstone used Studio Spots, Studio Colors, and Studio Beams™ from High End Systems, Coemar CF7s, a Wholehog console, Wybron Coloram scrollers, Rosco smoke machines, MDG hazers, City Theatrical 3300 dry ice foggers, 4k and 2.5k Arri HMI fresnels, and a Juliat 2.5k profile spot. Judgment at Nuremberg/The Invention of Love
Brian MacDevitt lights two new Broadway dramas. Judgment is based on the famous film about the Nuremberg trials; lighting plays a major role in this production's stark and gripping design. Invention is Tom Stoppard's new play about Victorian poet A.E. Housman and many of his contemporaries; MacDevitt's lighting is a key player in the production's dreamlike atmosphere.
My Fair Lady
After his around-the-world sailing sabbatical, David Hersey has roared back onto the London scene by designing the lighting for the Royal National Theatre's standing-room-only revival of Lerner & Loewe's 1956 musical, My Fair Lady, which transfers to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the West End in July. Hersey's lighting rig includes Vari-Lite VL7™ and VL6™ automated luminaries, ETC Source Fours, Rainbow color scrollers, a Strand 500 series console, DHA Digital Light Curtains, and a new DHA gobo effect designed especially for this production. Trevor Nunn directs; sets and costumes are by Anthony Ward; choreography by Matthew Bourne. Ellen Lampert-Gréaux reports.
It’s a European phenomenon: a continent-wide pop song contest broadcast in 23 countries, with real-time voting by the viewers. A beloved tradition for nearly 50 years, it remains a little-known event in the United States. Now, David Barbour takes you backstage at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, held in Copenhagen, with a massive rig that includes Martin automated lighting and Vari*Lite control, with additional contributions by Chain Master, Space Cannon and High End Systems, among others.
FILM: Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Glam rock is the musical fuel that propels the shiny, paste-jewelry style of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, directed by and adapted from his hit stage show by star John Cameron Mitchell. The title character of this winner at the Sundance Film Festival is a transgendered East German pop star wannabe touring a chain of fast-food restaurants in the American heartland. Cinematographer Frank G. DeMarco, a documentary and indie-film stalwart, puts some glitter into Hedwig’s tacky existence. By John Calhoun.
TV: You Don't Know Jack
Go backstage with LD Simon Miles and get the story behind the new ABC game show, You Don't Know Jack. Based on the CD-ROM game, this computer hit targets the small screen, using a plethora of Vari*Lite® VL5s™, VL7s™, and a Virtuoso™ console, ETC Source Fours, Rosco gel, and traditional Mole-Richardson TV instruments. Sharon Stancavage reports.
