Tony Award-winning scenic designer David Gallo* will be the featured speaker at the Live Design Projection Master Classes (BPMC) on Monday, May 24, 2010. The Classes will be held at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.

The BPMC schedule will kick off with a session entitled: David Gallo on Design, in which Gallo discusses his integrated approach to scenic and projection design, with a look at his methods for incorporating projections into new musicals and plays. This session will be followed by a case study on the current Broadway musical Memphis, featuring David Gallo, who designed the ground breaking scenic projections with co-projection designer Shawn Sagady. They will provide an in-depth look at the integrated scenic and image design for the Broadway musical, Memphis, including content creation, projection systems integration and motion control for the images using a coolux Pandoras Box media server. Steve Gilbard, president, coolux International, will also participate in the session.

The afternoon sessions will cover technology and projection design for the future with the next generation of designers. The BPMC is part of the full week of Live Design Master Classes, which run May 21-27, 2010. David Gallo’s live scenic designs can be seen daily in over one dozen cities worldwide. His repertoire is diverse, as it ranges from Blue Man Group (NY, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas) to Memphis on Broadway to the international tours of family entertainment such as Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE, Ringling Brothers Circus, and Spongebob Squarepants.
He is deeply interested in crafting designs for the stage with all sorts of artists and most recently designed the new Walter Mosley play Fall of Heaven at The Cincinnati Playhouse as well as Stick Fly by Lydia Diamond at both Arena Stage and The Huntington Theatre Company.
He won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for The Drowsy Chaperone and his work as the original set designer for August Wilson’s later plays garnered him two additional Tony Award nominations. In addition to many Broadway productions (most recently reasons to be pretty, Xanadu, A Catered Affair, Radio Golf, Gem of the Ocean, and Company) he has worked extensively throughout Europe and Asia. He currently has large scale musicals running in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.
