Director/set designer Bernard Utzan (with Claude Girard), costume designer Cynthia Savage, and lighting designer Donald Thomas have collaborated on the Seattle Opera's Pagliacci, which runs from January 12 to 26 at McCaw Hall.
Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery in New York City opens its winter Global Exchange season with Daniel Léveillé Danse from Montreal in Twilight Of The Oceans, with lighting by Jean Jauvin, January 10 to 12, followed by Richard Siegal/The Bakery in As If Stranger, January 17 to 19, with lighting by Antoine Seigneur, sets by Virginie Mira, and video by Philip Bussmann. Next up are two performances in Danspace's City/Dans series: Jordan Fuch's Thicket, January 24 to 26, with lighting design by Carol Mullins and costumes by Joy Havens; and Colleen Thomas Dance, January 31 to February 2, with visual design by Joanna Seitz and lighting by Carol Mullins.
Designer John Macfarlane made his debut this season at The Metropolitan Opera with a new production of Englebert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, directed by Richard Jones, which premiered on December 24 and runs in repertory through January 31; lighting is by Jennifer Tipton.
Projection designer Peter Nigrini recently designed the Fort Worth Opera world premiere of Frau Margot, with scenery by Alison Nalder and lighting by Matt Frey. Nigrini will also be designing projections for a new production of the opera adaptation of Angels in America, also at Fort Worth Opera, this spring. Other recent projects include The Blond, The Brunette, and The Vengeful Redhead, a co-production of Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and the Dallas Theatre Center; the tour of No Dice, with the Nature Theatre of Oklahoma (voted Best Break-out Theater Company by the Village Voice), which also premiered at SoHo Rep last month; Rambo/Romeo, again with the Nature Theatre, commissioned by the Salzburg Festival for next summer; and the workshop of Bill T. Jones' new musical with the working title The Fela Project about the life and music of Fela Kuti.
Stan Pressner has designed lighting for Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt at the Guthrie in Minneapolis this month. Scenery and costumes are by Laura Hopkins, with music by Claire van Kampen.
The Harlem School of the Arts showcased performances of the students of the Theatre Arts Apprentice Ensemble last month, in an original production, Montage of a Dream Deferred: The Poetry of Langston Hughes. The production was conceived, directed, and designed by theatre director Michael Early, with lighting design by Allison Ferrier and Jamal Bruce, sound design by Menon Dwarka, and set construction by Harlan Penn.
Growing Up 70s opened Off Broadway last month starring Barry Williams from the Brady Bunch at The Theater at HA! Comedy Club in Times Square, New York, with lighting design by Michael L. Kimmel, costume design by Doreen Breen, scenic design by Kyle Dixon, production stage management by Lisa Weinshrott, and assistant stage management by Jill Zakrzewski.
