Two options of beginning-level hands-on training in automated lighting programming will be offered as part of the eighth annual Broadway Lighting Master Classes (BLMC) Wednesday, December 6, in New York City. These full-day intensive courses are co-sponsored by BLMC and ESTA's technical education committee.

The first hands-on training option, "DMX and Automated Luminaires," focuses on programming automated fixtures with one of today's cutting-edge DMX consoles for moving lights. The consoles are generously provided by such leading companies as A.C. Lighting (GrandMA), Avab, Compulite, ETC, Rosco/ET (Horizon), and Strand Lighting (participants will be assigned first-come, first-served to one console type). The moving lights are provided courtesy of Vari-Lite, and the course is led by industry veteran Jim Waits of Vari-Lite, with participation by various manufacturers' representatives. The course will be held in the Pope Auditorium of Fordham University at Lincoln Center and is limited to 48 participants.

The second option features Flying Pig Systems Wholehog II consoles with WYSIWYG and moving lights from High End Systems. This full-day course is taught by leading Wholehog programmer Vickie Claiborne of High End Systems, who has just returned from a programming stint at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. This will be taught at High End Systems' new Manhattan facility at 311 West 43rd Street, Suite 400, and is limited to 16 participants (two per console).

The fee for either one of these courses is $195 and includes coffee and muffins in the morning, and soda and cookies in the afternoon (participants are on their own for lunch). Both courses will be held 9am-6pm. While priority for registration will be given to full BLMC participants, others interested in the courses will be enrolled as space permits.

The popular four-day BLMC seminar on the latest trends and techniques in Broadway lighting will follow December 7-10, with a distinguished faculty led by Tony Award-winning LD Jules Fisher.

Also part of the BLMC weekend are the annual Entertainment Design EDDY Awards on Friday evening, December 8, and the annual lifetime achievement panel sponsored by Fourth Phase. For complete information about BLMC 2000 consult the BLMC website at, or call Greg Havas at 212/229-2965 x829.
