Shell Painting

By Marian Sandberg-Dierson

The Hollywood Bowl's Summer Season Opening Night Concert was accompanied by large-format projections by Kinetic Lighting via the company's Finelite® Projectors. Executive producers Chuck Gayton and Wayne Baruch, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, brought in Kinetic for the event. Kinetic owner Daniel Bortz, who developed the Finelite in 1997, in turn contracted freelancer Ron Simms to come up with three concepts, including projections of ferns, lava, and stylized floral themes. According to Bortz, the producers liked all of Simms' designs, and they ended up using all three.

In the end, eight Finelites® covered the Bowl's signature shell, projecting a variety of themed looks to coordinate with the music and accentuate a fireworks spectacular which concluded the event. Additional projectors were focused onto the stage wall. The team had to ensure that projectors would be hidden from the sight lines of concert-goers. Performers such as Trisha Yearwood, Josh Groban, Joshua Bell, Frank Sinatra Jr., and the Los Angeles Philharmonic entertained a sold-out crowd.
