BLMC Schedule 2008Broadway Lighting Master Class Schedule 2008Over the years, the BLMC has proved to be one of the best seminars of its kind, drawing a large international audience, many of whom return year after year. There will also be a special Projection Master Classes component to the BLMC this year, held on Monday, May 19, 2008at the XL LED Lab in NYC. ... Who Should Attend?Attendees to the BLMC range from professional designers of top shows (staff from Disney and Blue Man are among the alums) to regional theatre designers to design educators and students. With seminars that cover everything from the basics of broadway lighting, finding inspiration through art, organizing paperwork, as well as panel discussions on working with projection and scenic design––the BLMC provides across-the-board training. I have spent the last week here at the Live Design Master Classes and have learned more in one week than in the last semester of college. I have been given the chance to meet with some of the most important designers in their fields and pick their brains. I have really enjoyed this week and am ready for my next show to try all the things I have learned. Next year's classes are already on my mind and what possible things I might learn during them. This was my second year here at the Master Classes and it won't be my last. "Hearing Jules Fisher is like reading Robert Edmond Jones [seminal early 20-century lighting and set designer]. Everyone in the business should do it from time to time." Creative consultant for the BLMC since its debut, Jules Fisher has designed the lighting for more than 150 Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, as well as film, ballet, opera, television, and rock-and-roll concert tours. He has garnered eight Tony Awards, a record in this category, for Pippin (1972), Dancin’ (1978), Ulysses in Nighttown (1973), Grand Hotel (1990), The Will Rogers Follies (1991), Jelly’s Last Jam (1992), Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk (1996), and Assassins (2004), the latter five collaborations with his long-time partner Peggy Eisenhauer. Fisher began working with Eisenhauer 19 years ago on Bob Fosse’s Big Deal. Most recently they designed lighting for comedian Mario Cantone’s Laugh Whore and Chita Rivera: A Dancer’s Life, which is currently on Broadway. Other recent theatre credits include Caroline, Or Change, Jane Eyre, Ragtime, and Gypsy. His credits as a producer include The Rink, the award-winning Lenny, Bob Fosse's Dancin', and Dangerous Games. Fisher and Eisenhauer’s theatrical lighting designs, in collaboration with cinematographer Dion Beebe, on the film Chicago were honored with a 2003 Academy Award nomination for Cinematography. Other recent performance lighting can be seen in the films Dreamgirls, Chicago, The Producers, Stepford Wives, Marci "X," and School of Rock.
