After considering many different options, they decided that the solution would be to supplement the DJ booth with an LED video screen display. They felt the addition of a video wall would enhance and intensify the performance of the featured act, adding a powerful visual element that would serve as a commanding focal point in the club.
This design strategy was carried out to perfection by Dorel Baila of LED Source, LLC (www.LEDsource.com), who installed a 9.6’ wide by 6.4’ high LED display behind the DJ booth. To create the screen, Baila used EPV762 high-resolution LED video panels from Elation Professional, supplied by Freed Sales, Inc. (North Miami, FL).
A 7.62mm pixel pitch square LED panel, the EPV762 utilizes 3-in-1 RGB SMD LEDs to deliver 2,000-nit brightness and sharp visual images. It features 16 bit processing, a wide viewing angle (horizontal 135°/ vertical 110°), and a high refresh rate (2,000Hz) for flicker-free performance. Each panel measures 19.2” x 19.2” and weighs 28.7 lbs.
The video screen installed at Wild Knight consists of a total of 24 EPV762 panels assembled in a 6 x 4 configuration (one additional unit was purchased by the club as a spare). Easy to hang and rig, the panels have a slim cabinet design and seamless mechanical system, with Ethercon in/out for video signal, Powercon in/out for power link, and a built-in 100-240v PSU. Built to the highest quality and safety standards, the panels are cETLus approved.
For all their stunning brightness, high-resolution images and professional features, the EPV762 panels are surprisingly economically priced, Baila noted. This value-driven pricing was a big factor in the club’s decision to go with the Elation product. “The club owners were very close to a 12mm LED video display purchase from a competing manufacturer, but I was able to offer them an Elation 7mm system at virtually the same cost,” said Baila.
Now the visual centerpiece of Wild Knight, the versatile LED display is being used for a variety of functions. During shows, it typically features custom content supplied by the touring DJs performing each evening, which often includes the DJ’s logo and their signature visual imagery. The club also uses the screen to advertise upcoming events, featured acts and promotions.
According to one of the club owners, the big advantage the LED wall has provided Wild Knight over the local competition is the ability to add video content to big DJ shows. “The DJs themselves have been impressed with the added energy and excitement that the LED wall brings during shows, and it creates a lasting effect when they play at Wild Knight. We have had many DJs who use videos along with their DJ set, and this has allowed us to bring in artists that normally would look for a larger venue in cities more notorious for big acts. Dada Life, Bingo Players, Bad Boy Bill, Ferry Corsten, Wolfgang Gartner, all have their own visuals and love the fact that we offer the opportunity for them to show off their full show. We also use these opportunities to splice in our own flyers for upcoming nights. This has added an additional level of marketing for the venue that we did not have before.
“The LED wall has also allowed us to offer many of our accounts, mainly liquor distributors, opportunities to cross market within the club and sponsor many events, added the club owner. “This is a huge draw for these companies and has given us a way of advertising that we were previously missing.”
To ensure a truly professional video experience, a fulltime audio-visual expert was hired by Wild Knight to handle all of the content on the LED wall, as well as some of the club’s other lighting systems. “People are blown away by the quality of the 7mm wall and always compare our 4,000 sq. ft. club to those super clubs around the world,” said the club owner. “The patrons are fixated on the wall most of the time and it creates an added element of entertainment.
“Recently Dada Life played at Wild Knight, and the night before they were at the Coachella music festival. They expressed their displeasure that they had not been able to use their visuals at one of the biggest festivals in the world, but the very next night were able to use them at a 500-person club. Overall, I could not be happier with the 7mm LED wall – it was exactly what we were looking for.”
