High Resolution Systems' Drew Taylor manned the system for client Background Images, which delivered video content to the eyeball-shaped screens behind Eminem onstage. The UDC-400, a software-based control platform that allows simple, cost-effective control of devices using IP (TCP/UDP) or serial (232/422/485) protocols, worked in conjunction with a Vista Montage 2 control console to extend the functionality of a Christie Vista Spyder X20.
The Spyder switched content to multiple screens displaying bold live-action and graphic imagery combined with IMAG of Eminem's performance to symbolize the rapper's recovery from his addiction to drugs and alcohol. The UDC-400 proved easy to use in the intense, live environment of the concerts quickly executing pre-programmed commands and cues at the push of a button.
The UDC-400 was even an ergonomic match for the job. "There's an empty area on the Montage console where the UDC-400 fits perfectly," notes Taylor. "It enabled me to recall presets on the Spyder to play back from the media server on all the screens or bring in IMAG keys on certain screens. That freed up the Spyder controller for other kinds of live switching tasks. The UDC-400 performed great under the pressure of the live shows. It was right at home, too."
