CONCERT
Olympics 2008 Opening Ceremonies
The opening ceremony on August 8 for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games at Beijing National Stadium in China promises to be an eye-popping event directed by Chinese film director Zhang Yimou, with stage designer Mark Fisher, multimedia designer Andreé Verleger, and lighting designers Sha Xiaolan of China and Paul Collison from Australia. The lighting system includes a large Martin Professional rig with over 1,100 automated fixtures, including MAC 2000 Wash units and new MAC 2000 Wash XB moving head luminaries.
CONCERT
Celine Dion
Celine Dion’ Taking Chances tour has just wrapped a successful run though sold-out stadiums across Europe, stopping for a summer break before starting its North American leg. Yves Aucoin is at Celine’s side again for her big outing, with gear supplied by Solotech, including equipment from Vari-Lite, Ayrton, Martin Professional, Robert Juliat, MDG, MA Lighting, Doug Fleenor, ELC, Wireless Solution, CM, Chain Master, Arco, Element Labs, Coolux, Christie Digital, Gerriets, and more.
CONCERT
Italy's Finest: Vasco Rossi and Luciano Ligabue
Two of Italy’s top rock artists, Vasco Rossi and Luciano Ligabue, have tours with different slants on visuals. Paolo Gualdi (video designer for Ligabue) and Billy Bigliardi (lighting designer for Ligabue) incorporate gear from Komaden, Barco, LGI, High End Systems, and Zap Technology, to name a few. Giovanni Pinna (video and lighting designer for Vasco Rossi) is using gear from Barco, MA Lighting, High End Systems, Martin Professional, Coemar, Vari-Lite, Clay Paky, Novalight, SGM, and more.
THEATRE
Marguerite On Lodon's West End
Marguerite opened on London’s West End at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, with sets and costumes by Paul Brown, lighting by Mark Henderson, video and projections by Sven Ortel, and sound by Paul Groothuis. The set was built by Scott Fleary Limited, with automation by Stage Technologies.
CLUB
Ember Café & Music Club
Opened in June 2008, Ember in Anaheim, CA, is a 6,000sq.-ft venue that was transformed from an old dilapidated building into a dramatic entertainment spot with a restaurant, multiple VIP lounges and bars, and a dance floor lined with custom-lit cabanas. Lighting was designed by Richard Rutherford and project designer was Charles Doell. Lighting gear was mainly provided by Acclaim Lighting and Elation Professional, with video/projection from Sanyo, Vizio, Sony, Numark, and Kramer, and audio from Shure, Pioneer, DBX, and QSC.
OPERA
Staging Die Soldaten
Staging the opera Die Soldaten at the Lincoln Center Festival meant transforming the Park Avenue Armory in New York into a high tech production facility. Contributing to the rigging, design, and gear was Sapsis Rigging (over 150 chain hoists and 3,000’ of truss), as well as Rose Brand (thousands of feet of soft goods to mask and create the production space), among others.
