311 Day: Fanning Out the Rock Experience
LMG Touring takes us on a journey through the company’s process of working to achieve a 360° video environment for 311 Day at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, for a five-hour, live performance that was also offered as a pay-per-view Web event. The HD video package included FLED FL-io11 tiles, as well as gear from Snell & Wilcox, Avid, AJA, Panasonic, Sony, and Thomson.

Shanghai Spheres
Fisher Technical (FTSI) discusses working with Japanese firms ADK and on mechanical, control, and software elements for the Ball Grid Array at the Shanghai World Expo, a kinetic sculpture centerpiece of the pavilion. Using a grid array of 1,008 150mm diameter spheres, each suspended and motivated by its own miniature winch, FTSI had to create a system that was larger, faster, more responsive, and easier to program than any previous version.

Sonic Forest 2.0
Architect/composer/musician Chris Janney brings his technology wizardry to Peak Performances@Montclair, with “Everywhere Is the Best Seat,” a sound/light installation in a stone amphitheatre at Montclair State University based on his Sonic Forest installations with interactive towers or “trees.” In this newest version, each tower comprises four Allen Bradley photo-sensors, five MR16 full color-changing LEDs by Philips Color Kinetics with custom DMX control, a Diversitronics Star strobe light and a 6.5” full-range JBL speaker in custom-built tuned port. The installation will be in place from September 1 through the end of November, with a few live concerts on the stage of the amphitheatre as well, utilizing a Quad sound system with Meyer Sound loudspeakers.
